ERGOS Work Simulator

Panel #5 - Seated Work Tolerance

Measurement Factors

  • Reaching — Demonstration of appropriate seated work range of motion, where maximum performance is calculated.

  • Handling — Essential tasks identified in the Department of Labor (DOL) Job Analysis format as seizing, holding, grasping, turning, or otherwise working with the hand or hands (fingering not involved).

  • Fingering — Essential tasks identified in the DOL Job Analysis format as picking, pinching, or otherwise working with the ringers primarily (rather than with the whole hand or arm as in handling).

  • Feeling — Essential tasks identified in the DOL Job Analysis format as perceiving such attributes of objects and materials as size, shape, temperature, or texture, by means of receptors in the skin, particularly those of the finger tips.

  • Seated Work Range of Motion — Electronically-sensed appropriate biomechanic work range of the upper extremity, in relationship to trunk position.

  • Wrist Flexion/Extension Strength — Isolated isometric wrist flexion/extension strength testing produces a clear functional capacity rating compared to the DOL job demands rating system. The essential tasks of sustained wrist flexion/extension are identified in graphic form for easy comparison.

  • Hand Grip Strength — Sustained hand grip strength is measured using unique ERGOS® methodology. The essential task of functional sustained grip strength is compared to the DOL job demands rating system.

  • Vision and Hearing Screening — Essential tasks identified in the DOL Job Analysis format as:

    • Obtaining impressions through the eyes of the shape, size, distance, motion, color, or other characteristics of objects

    • Perceiving the nature of sounds by the ear.

    • Both are screened according to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and Department of Transportation standards.

  • Finger Flexion — Functional finger flexion is identified using a unique keyboarding loading activity. Repetitive flexion loading of each finger and thumb produces data which is combined with other fingering performance data. This information presents the participant's ability to perform essential tasks requiring the ability to independently move finger and thumb to move and/or engage work tools and controls such as buttons, levers, or sensors.

  • Pinch Strength — Functional pinch strength is measured in two formats:

    • Key pinch and

    • Three-point pinch.

    • The essential task of lateral and three-point sustained prehension pinch strength is compared to the DOL job demands rating system.

  • Wrist Pronation/Supination — Isolated isometric wrist pronation/supination strength testing produces a comparative functional capacity rating that relates performance to the DOL job demands rating system. The essential tasks of sustained wrist pronation/supination are identified in easy-to-read graphic form.

The ERGOS® Panel #5 provides 11 tasks, representing in excess of 50 activities, to develop a comprehensive picture of upper extremity work function.

The ERGOS® Panel #5 progressively and systematically measures upper extremity function in the most comprehensive, reproducible, and valid procedure available. Activities are designed and are related to job function, job simulation, and recovery patterns of workers who have sustained upper extremity injuries.

Seated Work Tolerance

The worker follows a series of work-related measurement criteria designed to identify early signs of Repetitive Motion Trauma. Objective evidence of dysfunction associated with Repetitive Motion Trauma, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and other orthopedic and neurologic dysfunction is identified and recorded. Effects of treatment and reasonable accommodation on the trauma can be measured and reported. Work performance in direct comparison to employer entry-level standards (Methods-Time Measurement—MTM) provides both a loss control system and timely monitoring of recovery and return to work for employers.

Work Therapy

ERGOS® features the unique ability to provide both functional capacity testing and work hardening/work conditioning. The therapist-controlled procedure establishes work routines, monitored and controlled through computer instructions, to establish self-paces or job-paced (Dictionary of Occupational Titles -- DOT -- occasional, frequent, constant) regimens. Objective scoring enables a referral source to monitor progress toward full recovery and return to work.
