Work Simulator
Panel #3 - Work Endurance Component
Work
Endurance testing -- provides an environment to separate the effects of injury
vs. de-conditioning in the accident process.
Measurement Factors
-
Walking -- A progressive weight-bearing
dynamic lift and carry task associated with material handling jobs.
-
Climbing (Ascending and Descending) -- Isolation
of the reaction of lower extremity, including ankle and knee, under weight-bearing
conditions. Essential tasks identified in the Department of Labor (DOL) Job
Analysis format as ascending or descending ladders, stairs, scaffolding, ramps,
poles, ropes, and the like, using the feet and legs and/or hands and arms.
-
Balancing -- Essential tasks identified
in the DOL Job Analysis format as maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling
when walking or standing, under weight-bearing conditions associated with material
handling.
-
Pushing -- Essential tasks identified in
the DOL Job Analysis format as exerting force upon an object, under weight-bearing
conditions, so that object moves away from the force.
-
Pulling -- Essential tasks identified in
the DOL Job Analysis format as exerting force upon an object, under weight-bearing
conditions, so that object moves toward from the force.
-
Lifting -- Essential tasks identified in
the DOL Job Analysis format as raising and lowering an object, in a dynamic
mode, from one level to another (includes upward pulling).
-
Carrying -- Essential tasks identified in
the DOL Job Analysis format as transporting an object, in dynamic mode, usually
holding it in the hands or arms or on the shoulder.
-
Stooping -- Essential tasks identified in
the DOL Job Analysis format as bending the body downward and forward by bending
the spine at the waist.
-
Handling -- Essential tasks identified in the
DOL Job Analysis format as seizing, holding, grasping, turning, in a dynamic
mode, or otherwise working with the hand or hands, under weight-bearing conditions
(fingering not involved).
-
Work Endurance
-- Excessive fatigue associated with de-conditioning, having the effect
of lower industrial standards (Methods-Time Measurement -- MTM) scores not associated
with point-of-injury limitations.
Work Endurance Testing
The worker follows a series
of integrated, repetitive, selecting/sorting, lifting, carrying, walking, and climbing
activities to evaluate work endurance. The worker assembles a series of progressively
heavier work trays, which are carried up the industrial stairs and placed on a scale
to validate weight carried. The worker then sorts the items from the trays into
storage. Worker's response time and increased errors are computed as part of a systematic
formula to determine fatigue and de-conditioning. Separation of essential factors
relating to industrial injury vs. the effects of de-conditioning provide objective
evidence of the need for work treatment or change-of-job assessment and training.
Work Therapy
ERGOS® features
the unique ability to provide both functional capacity testing and work hardening/work
conditioning. The therapist-controlled procedure establishes work routines, monitored
and controlled through computer instructions, to establish self-paces or job-paced
(Dictionary of Occupational Titles -- DOT -- occasional, frequent, constant)
regimens. Objective scoring enables a referral source to monitor progress toward
full recovery and return to work.
